Autumnal Garland

I spent a day with the Cartmel Art Society this week where we relived our early schooldays printing and sticking leaves and playing with paint! We had some spectacular results by the end of the day with some dynamic autumnal washes flooding the paper and creating a virtual woodland carpet. The day proved so popular I will be returning to do it all again next week with the rest of the group!

The Aroma of Christmas...

Having just completed a couple of new ink paintings I can now smell the oncoming Christmas season with the evocative aroma of these clementines. With their intense orange colour and contrasting green leaves they are a reminder of my favourite seasonal cake recipe, the Clementine Cake by Nigella Lawson, which is so yummy and is a cake tin staple for all my gluten free guests....
So enjoy these pictures and do get hold of that recipe!

Laurel Gallery ...

I have been busy today framing up my latest paintings for my solo show in Edinburgh which opens next Friday!  I have used my yummy printing blocks to add a focus to my tree sketches from Umbria. I have put them into some chunky white gessoed frames which I bought at Cox & Cox. I hope they will make someone a lovely Christmas gift....

Arte Umbria Jenny Wheatley Masterclass

I have just had a fabulous week with Sara and David Moody at their beautiful Italian manor house nestling in the Umbrian countryside. Jenny, myself and 5 other painters spent 6 days exploring the local villages and towns and as well as the extensive gardens surrounding the house. I got a little fixated with the pool and the olive trees. The weather was perfect - hot and sunny - the food was delicious and the wine flowed! All helped to make a memorable week and hopefully a fruitful week as far as my painting goes... It was great to be able to see Jenny at work and I hope to put into practice all of the advice she has given me.
Here are a few of my sketches done on location - I can draw buildings after all!

Watch this space for news on my return to Arte Umbria in June as a tutor -  Can't wait!

A Day's Sketching...

I have just spent a relaxing day sketching in Kendal on one of Lynda Grey's Brewery Arts workshops. It made a pleasant change to work small and on location.

In my studio...

Its time to play with watercolour... here's my studio today as I look for inspiration in the marks and colours that appear on the paper using a vase of garden flowers and a collage I made this morning as my starting point.

I shall take sections of the experimental piece and use them as inspiration for a new series. These examples show how I use photoshop to play with composition and colour. I want to add some detailed pencil drawing on top of the large washes of colour for visual contrast.

My very useful son Fred has now got the new site up and running before he jets off to France. You can now access workshop info and booking forms and see what exhibitions I have coming up. And of course you can still see a selection of my work both old and new. Here is a photo of my studio taken for the 'about me' page.

Last Chance to See....

...the Coppice themed exhibition at Farfield Mill where an eclectic group of artists and craftspeople have put on an interesting display of works inspired by or using the coppiced wood. Here are some images of my 'coppice collection' on display there until the end of April ...

Painting Course

Just had a great few days on a course at the Seawhite Studios in Sussex where I had the chance to work for 4 days without any other obligations. Although the course was called Simply Paint I got a bit obsessed with drawing lines on tracing paper in response to some geometric patterned fabric in the still life set up.
Here are a few of the results...

Weekend Workshop News

We had a glorious weekend for our Brusho sessions and it was great to see such inspired and varied work going up on the walls as the weekend progressed. I hope that everyone who took part got something out of it and will continue to work with the inks and different print processes at home. Here are a few photos taken on Sunday afternoon...

Fruit and flowers with Inks

I have been doing some more experimenting with the brusho inks, using the thickener to add texture to the inks and then painting and print making with them. I tried painting onto an acetate sheet but the inks smudged too much so I have instead just made a print from a painting done on a sheet of cartridge. The absorbency of the paper helps to keep the ink stable. I shall attach a couple of test pieces... I added the lemons in after making the print for contrast.

China Blue

I have a weekend of Brusho's coming up with my workshops at the Heron Corn Mill in Beetham.
I have bought a lovely selection of china and have been having a go myself this morning.... I love the blue and white theme and I think this could be the start of a new collection...

Coppice news...

Here is a detail from the watercolour which came out of the photoshopped piece I did last week. I managed to create the 'cut-up' look by using masking tape at various stages in its creation.
I have also been working on some charcoal drawings to inform my painting.

The Coppice

I have just started working on a small series of works with a Coppice theme for a mixed exhibition at Farfield Mill in Sedbergh. I am intrigued by the nature of the cutting back to stimulate copious regrowth and the fact that the wood is then used for multiple craft use such as weaving and carpentry.

I would like to echo this cutting and weaving in my artistic process. This early example is a watercolour that has been cut up and rearranged and then layered up in photoshop. I shall now use this to generate the next piece in the process...
