Factory Studio at Work

The heating is finally on! Many a thermal garment had to be tossed aside toady as the creative juices got flowing. We had our final session for 2014 this morning so now it is time to prepare the studio for the forthcoming Open Studios event on December 13th and 14th.

The First Anenomes

Same principle as the last entry - first I made the collaged base and then painted the jar of flowers on top.  I love these flowers so was very pleased to see a bunch waiting for me outside the florist in Lancaster. I did have to hold them up with string today though as they are starting to droop...

The all dancing 'All Singing Ringing Tree'

Another demonstration piece from my acrylics session which has lots of collaged, gelled, transferred and painted areas to create a visual and tactile textural painting.

Dancing Yellow...

Here is another oil bar study along with the line up of my work from the last couple of days.
I have had my Rose Hilton books out again as I love her simplicity and use of colour. Less is more...

I held my first art class in the new space on Monday and have just spent today working with my oil bars so now it smells like a real studio too! I am painting a collection of new oil bar works ready for my galleries in the run up to Christmas...

@ The Factory...

I finally got to move into my new studio space at the Factory in Kendal this week. I have a new class starting there on Monday morning so managed to prioritise the tea and biscuit area ready for the rush!
I also got the charcoal out and the paint flowing, this should be a great place in which to create... (and party!)

A great place from which to watch over the students

Kettle's on!

A big thank you to Roger for this great desk

I have just been commissioned to write about the way I work with oil bars for an upcoming issue of Artists and Illustrators magazine. I won't give the game away at the moment but here is a glimpse of the painting I developed to accompany the article...

Arte Week...

I have just got back from a weeks teaching in Umbria. Had a lovely group who were all eager to get the paint flowing. Here we all are in the sun but as you can see from my landscape sketch a storm was brewing from Wednesday evening...
I would like to say a big thanks to all the group for being prepared to play and get their hands dirty and use a big brush! I hope that you are all inspired to keep adding lots of water!

Still amongst the buttercups...

... and mayfly, cased caddis, eels and freshwater shrimp!

I have spent the last few weeks working with the South Cumbria Rivers Trust in selected primary schools in the area. Each school group was given the opportunity to spend time in and around their local river discovering its delights. We have had some great finds which so far point to healthy habitats here in South Cumbria. Philippa does all the science bit and I then encourage them to be inspired and get creative making their own river creatures. It is our last school this week and it looks as though we are going to have another dry session.
I hope you like this small selection of the artworks.

The Factory @ Kendal

Breathing life into one of Kendal’s most impressive post-industrial sites, The Factory Kendal is a dynamic collection of creative workspaces and versatile event venues. The Factory is a home for some of the North West’s most exciting artists, creative businesses and ambitious events.
It’s all happening here.

Follow this link to see what is about to evolve in Kendal...

I am one of the lucky few to have been given the opportunity to get involved in this fabulous project and hope to be moving in there over the summer. My new studio space will give me the opportunity to exhibit, teach and paint in one flexible space. The walls are already being built...

Back from TCAF, Toronto

I was lucky to accompany Sean to a comic convention in Toronto last week. I even bought my first comic and spent a few hours browsing all the indie stalls. We also went on a visit to the Niagara Falls where I put my Hipstamatic app to some good use! Here are some of the dramatic results...

Another Successful Art Trail...

Just to say thanks to all those who managed to call in this weekend and support me during my Open House. It was great to get such positive feedback on my new work and have the house full of art lovers (and their willing partners!) The cats also enjoyed all the attention...
One of the most popular paintings was 'Late Sun', a little sketch I did for the large painting 'Treeline' which you can just see on the mantlepiece in the photograph below.

If anybody would like to order prints or cards of my latest work please do get in touch via my website which I shall be updating as soon as my techy son comes home for Easter!
